The project aims to provide pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure across the entire Madinat Zayed City, located in the Al Dhafra Region of Abu Dhabi. This initiative focuses on developing over 85km of dedicated pedestrian walkways and cycle tracks, complemented by landscape improvements to enhance the area’s aesthetic and functional value. Additional elements include minor road adjustments and the development of associated parking facilities to promote sustainable and safe transportation options for both residents and visitors.
The site visit revealed several challenges within the proposed area. Many roads lack infrastructure for vulnerable road users, such as dedicated pedestrian paths or cycling facilities, creating safety risks. Street lighting is positioned on the verge, but some areas remain inadequately illuminated, further compromising safety. Additionally, existing bus stops lack safe waiting spaces, posing risks for vulnerable road users, particularly during high traffic periods.
Our road safety audit recommends several key measures such as Hazard Management: removing or shielding obstacles in clear zones to mitigate potential risks; Pedestrian & Cyclist Connectivity: enhancing crossings, kerb designs, and footways for smoother transitions; Signage & Road Markings: streamlining guidance and junction priorities for better clarity; and Traffic Calming & Speed Management: incorporating raised crossings, speed humps, yield lines, and channelising islands to slow vehicles and protect all road users.
