East Midfield Cargo Terminal at Abu Dhabi Airport, Abu Dhabi

Project Introduction

The East Midfield Cargo Terminal (EMCT) at Abu Dhabi Airport is a warehousing facility located 35 km east of the city center. It includes two buildings: the East Midfield Cargo Terminal and the Live Animal Holding Facility, with a total GFA of 83,977 sqm. The site is surrounded by commercial, recreational, and industrial developments, with future projects like the South Side Destination Village and Logistics Park. The terminal will play a key role in supporting airport logistics. The project is expected to generate significant traffic during peak hours.

Challenges

Designing efficient site access and circulation for high traffic volumes was a key challenge. A parking strategy needed to accommodate the large number of trips generated by the facility. Additionally, the project required approval from ITC Abu Dhabi after conducting traffic impact assessments for future years, including 2025, 2030, and 2040. Managing these aspects was crucial for smooth operations.

Solution

A detailed traffic analysis was conducted for peak hours using the Abu Dhabi Trip Generation Manual (ADTGM). Site access and circulation were optimized to ensure smooth traffic flow. A parking strategy was developed to manage the expected demand. The traffic study provided key insights and secured approval from ITC Abu Dhabi. This approach ensured compliance with local regulations and addressed future traffic demands.
