ADNOC Petrol Stations

ADNOC Petrol Stations

Project Description

As a part of ADNOC’s strategic expansion plan, 7 petrol station were proposed across Abu Dhabi Emirate. Trublu Consulting was commissioned to undertake Stage 1 and Stage 2 for these stations.

Challenge

The integration of petrol stations into an existing area presented several road safety challenges, particularly in residential areas and high-speed corridors. In residential zones on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, the absence of traffic calming measures and speed enforcement led to consistently high vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of accidents. The high density of on-street parking contributed to congestion and created potential conflict points between vehicles and pedestrians. Furthermore, the proximity of petrol stations to local shops and mosques heightened pedestrian activity, particularly during peak hours, raising safety concerns.
On highways, where speed limits exceed 120 km/h, introducing petrol station access points posed additional risks. The absence of clear advance warning signs, speed reduction measures, and properly designed deceleration lanes increased the likelihood of sudden braking, abrupt lane changes, and merging conflicts.

Solution

A comprehensive RSA was conducted, leading to key recommendations that were fully incorporated into the final design:
Optimized Traffic Sign Placement: Advance warning and regulatory signage were repositioned and new signs were proposed to improve driver awareness and safe decision-making.

Traffic Calming Measures: Raised pedestrian crossings and speed humps were introduced to manage speeds and improve safety.

Enhanced Pedestrian Safety: Clearly marked crossings and protective barriers were implemented in high-footfall areas.

Speed Management on Highways: Graduated speed reduction signage and road markings were added to ensure a smooth transition into the station
