Al Saada Bridge Widening and Interchange Upgrade

Al Saada Bridge Widening and Interchange Upgrade

Project Description

The Al Saada Bridge on Abu Dhabi Island has been expanded from three to four lanes in each direction along the E10 corridor, enhancing capacity and improving traffic flow. The signalized junction beneath the bridge was also redesigned with localized widening to optimize turning movements and ensure smoother connectivity. Trublu was commissioned to undertake the post-construction Road Safety Audit, assessing the upgrades to ensure compliance with safety standards and enhance road user experience. This project reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to future-ready infrastructure, supporting safer and more efficient urban mobility.

Challenge

Expanding an existing bridge and widening a signalized junction present several road safety challenges, including managing temporary traffic diversions, maintaining clear lane markings, and ensuring adequate sight distances for drivers. Changes in lane configuration can lead to driver confusion, increasing the risk of merging conflicts and sudden braking. At the signalized junction, widening may create complex turning movements, requiring careful signal phasing to prevent red-light violations and pedestrian conflicts. Additionally, integrating new road geometry with existing infrastructure can impact drainage, lighting, and barrier placements, all of which must be optimized to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow.

Solution

We have recommended a series of road safety enhancements to improve barrier protection, manage vehicle speeds, and enhance pedestrian safety. These measures aim to reduce the risk of loss of control incidents, ensure safer transitions between road infrastructure, and create a more controlled environment at the signalized junction. Our recommendations also include improving roadside safety features, optimizing the layout of key infrastructure elements, and implementing measures to protect pedestrians from potential conflicts with traffic.
