Sea World – IP311 Junction Improvement

Sea World – IP311 Junction Improvement

Project Description

Sea World Abu Dhabi is a marine life theme park on Yas Island, featuring eight immersive realms, 100,000+ marine animals, interactive exhibits, rides, and live shows. It houses the region’s largest multi-species aquarium and focuses on conservation, education, and entertainment. This project upgrades the signalised junction of IP311 to include a controlled left turn from Yas Leisure Drive turning towards the site. Trublu Consulting was commissioned to undertake Stages, 1, 2 and 3 RSA for the site access points including the signalised junctions that link the project to Yas Leisure drive.

Challenge

The primary challenge lies in integrating the new access roads with the existing traffic infrastructure while maintaining safety and efficiency. The signalised junctions, which previously operated as three-arm junctions, now function as four-arm junctions, requiring reconfiguration to manage increased traffic volumes. The high-speed nature of Yas Leisure Drive, with a posted limit of 80 km/h and 3-4 lanes in each direction, introduces potential risks for turning vehicles and merging traffic. Additionally, pedestrian safety is a concern due to the absence of dedicated crossing points or pathways for safe movement across the busy road network, especially in areas with high tourist footfall.

Solution

To address these challenges, several measures were recommended to improve safety and accessibility. The new access roads were designed to seamlessly connect with the fourth arm of the signalised junctions, ensuring smooth traffic flow while minimizing conflict points. Enhanced road markings, signage, and barriers were recommended as part of the RSA to guide drivers and pedestrians effectively. Pedestrian safety was prioritized by proposing crossing facilities and walkways where feasible, ensuring safe access for visitors. These measures collectively aim to provide a secure and efficient road network supporting SeaWorld’s operations and the broader Yas Island attractions.
