Al Qana Development Traffic Impact Study Abu Dhabi

Project Description

Al Qana is an iconic public-private partnership project in Abu Dhabi, designed as a premier mixed-use leisure destination. The development includes a regional shopping center, high-end restaurants, exclusive office spaces, a park, and a marina, collectively generating over 2,500 two-way trips during the worst peak hour. This project aims to enhance the leisure and lifestyle offerings in Abu Dhabi, catering to residents and visitors alike. The development has 44,699 sqm GLA of regional shopping center, over 2000 seats high end restaurant, over exclusive office building with an area of 2800 GFA, dedicated park with a site area of 100,000 sqm and marina with 96 berths.

Challenges

The primary challenge was the impact of converting Al Khor Street into a one-way road, which significantly affected traffic dynamics in the area. The conversion led to performance issues at several key junctions, resulting in congestion and reduced operational efficiency. Managing the high traffic demand generated by the development while ensuring smooth vehicular and pedestrian movement required comprehensive analysis and planning.

Solution

A detailed Transportation Impact Study (TIS) was conducted to assess the implications of the road conversion and to propose necessary mitigation measures. The study focused on improving the performance of failing junctions through redesign and optimization. Measures included signal timing adjustments, lane configuration modifications, and enhanced traffic management strategies. The proposed solutions were validated and approved by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), ensuring a sustainable and efficient traffic flow for the Al Qana development.
